Reordering categories in the Media Library.
By default the Media Library in SiteManager (up to and including version 6.0) arranges the categories in the order that they were created.
This may not be much of an issue when you have only a handful of categories but with a longer list it can become quite inconvenient and time-consuming hunting down that elusive folder!
Workaround / Easter Egg
While there is no obvious way to reorder these categories it can be done with this workaround (for Administrators).
- Go to Content > Site Structure.
- Choose any section and select Section > Modify and wait until the “Modify Section, Show Details” screen loads.
- Now take a look at the URL in the browser address bar, which should look something like: https://URL/SiteManager?ctfn=hierarchy&fnno=10&sid=48
- Change the sid (section ID) to 3 — this is our ID number for the Media Library — and press Enter/Return/Go button. (It would appear from Duncan’s comment below that this ID isn’t the same for every installation, so … his advice is: “check out your Media Handler which gives you the home section for your media library. You can then hover over each sub-category to determine the correct section number”.
- This will open in “Section: Media Library > Categorised”.
- Click on the Reorder tab where you can apply the same ordering rules that you can for sections or content, e.g. Alphabetical A-Z, Alphabetical Z-A, etc., remembering to click on the Save Changes button at the bottom of the screen.
- To reorder subsections simply click on the appropriate link for that subsection and use the Reorder tab there.
I hope that helps some folks. We’ve found it really useful to be able to reorder our Media Library categories. We tend to order most categories in alphabetical (A-Z) order apart from the categories for the main University website CSS, JavaScript, Images which we lock in position at the top of the media library.
